In an effort to protect fisheries resources, ensure sustainable fishing, and curb illegal activities, the Bangladesh Navy has been conducting regular drives across coastal areas.

As part of this initiative, on Monday, the Bangladesh Navy, in collaboration with the Coast Guard and police, carried out joint drives in Patharghata of Barguna and Monpura of Bhola.

During the operations, a total of 195,000 meters of illegal fishing nets were seized, with an estimated market value of over Tk 1.65 crore.

In Patharghata’s Bishkhali River launch terminal, Kalmegha, Rupadhan, Chanbunia, Bainchutki, and Kakchira areas, Navy and Coast Guard teams confiscated around 80,000 meters of encircling nets, valued at over Tk 1.2 crore.

In a separate drive, at Monpura’s Janta Bazar and a nearby abandoned ice factory, Navy and police teams seized nearly 115,000 meters of current nets, worth more than Tk 40.50 lakh.

Later, in the presence of local police, upazila fisheries officials, and public representatives, the seized nets were destroyed publicly.

Officials noted that such joint operations by the Bangladesh Navy not only prevent illegal fishing and wastage of marine resources but also help protect coastal biodiversity and enhance the fisheries sector’s contribution to the national economy.

The Navy reaffirmed that, in line with government directives, it will continue similar drives and patrols in coastal and maritime boundary areas to preserve fisheries and uphold law and order.
