A large amount of illegal nets were seized and destroyed in a joint drive by the upazila administration, the upazila senior fisheries officer and police in Atrai river of Gurudaspur upazila of Natore.
In this operation, a total of 10 thousand meters of current net and other illegal nets were seized and burnt on the banks of Nandkuja river of Chachakoid, while about Tk 16 lakhs worth of nets were burnt and destroyed.
The drive was conducted in Atrai River led by Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Salma Akter on Tuesday morning. Senior Fisheries Officer Ratan Chandra Saha, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Asadul Islam and other policemen were present in the drive among others.
UNO ordered the destruction of the seized nets. At the end of the operation, the nets were burnt and destroyed on the river bank at afternoon and the seized fishes were given to a local Madrasa. Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Salma Akter said the operation against the illegal use current net and other banned net will continue. Illegal fishing is disrupting the natural balance of rivers and depleting fish resources. Activities will be strengthened to protect the rivers and reproduction of fish by continuing such operations, she added.
