Police have arrested four individuals in a raid on a counterfeit cigarette factory from Ulipur upazila in Kurigram district on Monday afternoon. The arrested were identified as Abul Khayer, 35, Harun Mia, 29, Shamsul Alam, 45 and Nojiyar Rahman, 60. All of them are residents from Mirganj Pathan Para village in Jaldhaka under Nilphamari district.
According to police, acting on a tip-off, a team from Ulipur police station conducted a raid at Abdul Majid’s house in Purbo Kaludanga villag under Gunai Gachh union in the upazila and seized a large quantity of cigarette wrappers, used paper, stickers and various other materials used for making cigarettes from their possessions.
They were producing counterfeit Star cigarettes illegally, evading administrative surveillance and then sold in local markets.
Ulipur Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Nazmus Sakib Sojib confirmed the incident and said that legal action will be taken against them.
