Inspector General of Police (IGP), Benazir Ahmed on Sunday night warned police against involvement in any corruption.

The police chief said, “If someone wants to be rich through corruption, let him resign his job, start business and become rich.”

He also ordered the police to bring police service to the doorsteps of the people.w

Benazir Ahmed issued the order while addressing a video conference from Police Headquarters.

In the video conference, all high officers including chiefs of Metropolitan police, Range police, Rapid Action Battalion, and Police Bureau of Investigation participated.

Talking to Bangladesh Post, Assistant Inspector General (Media and Public Relations) of Police Headquarters, Mir Sohel Rana confirmed the matter on Monday.

According to the IGP, each union in the country will be identified as a beat. Police authority will assign a police officer as the in-charge of each beat.  The assigned officer will be solely responsible for anything regarding the beat.

The said officer would have to regularly look after various issues including opportunities, and problems of the people in that union, would have to keep in touch with them on a regular basis and exchange views from time to time.

The IGP said, if it is implemented, police will be able to solve problems and provide the expected service very quickly.

Referring to the success stories of beat-policing in Dhaka, Sylhet and Mymensingh, he said, beat policing was very fruitful in these areas.

He further said, “We want to introduce beat policing in the whole country. Thus, we want to reach out to people easily.”

He said that they want to win people's hearts.

Appreciating the extra-ordinary services of police personnel during the current pandemic COVID-19 situation in the country, Benazir said that people did not come to police to get service, but rather police themselves   went to the people and provided all support, especially to the helpless.

Police personnel were infected and lost their lives protecting people from the COVID-19.  The IGP said, “Police were engaged in many humanitarian activities that were not their responsibility at all.”

He warned that police must be drug-free. He said, “No police personnel will take drugs, nor be engaged in drug trading.”
