Dengue infection went beyond control due to alleged negligence of duties of some major public service agencies and concerned government departments. Sources said that in addition to the city corporations, responsibilities of controlling population of Aedes mosquito also lies with eight other organizations. It is widely alleged that due to lack of adequate knowledge about the deadly dengue infection, coordination among the agencies and ignorance of responsibilities lead to indiscriminate excavation in the city allowing rainwater to accumulate which act as perfect breeding grounds for the Aedes mosquitoes to lay eggs, many of which can carry the deadly dengue virus.
Dhaka Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA), Rajdhani Unnayan Kartipokkho or Rajuk, Roads Department, Local Government Division, Rehab, National Housing Authority, Titas Gas and Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) are equally responsible for their role in keeping the city clean and hence prevent Aedes mosquitoes from laying eggs.
Most of the above mentioned departments and public service agencies directly or indirectly excavate roads and allotted residential or commercial plots. This allows the mosquitoes to lay eggs and also hatch in accumulated fresh water in the dug tunnels often left over for days. The female Aedes mosquitoes lay their eggs in small artificial or natural containers that hold fresh water, in particular rain water. Eggs are laid over a period of several days, are resistant to drying, and can survive for periods of six or more months.
When the container is refilled with water, the eggs hatch into larvae. The entire life cycle (i.e., from egg to adult) can occur in as little as 7-8 days. The life span for adult mosquitoes is around three weeks. It is alleged that due to many on-going mega projects excavation has increased to many extent allowing fresh waters to accumulate and also allow mosquitoes to lay eggs. Due to lack of coordination these dug tunnels also remain untouched for days or even weeks. Such ignorance apparently allows the mosquitoes to find perfect breeding places.
There are thousands of buildings under construction which are potential places of breeding sites of Aedes mosquitoes. The concerned departments supposed to inspect and supervise the progress often ignore their duties and so the slow pace of the construction works allow Dengue mosquitoes to lay more eggs and grow in population.
