Editors' Council president Nurul Kabir, also the Editor of New Age, on Monday said, the attackers wanted to kill those inside the news organisations when they set fire to the offices and hindered the endeavours of the Fire Service.
He made the remarks while talking about the recent attacks on The Daily Star and Prothom Alo.
"If we do not stand strong against them, then not only newspapers, but the whole society will be destroyed," he said while speaking at a press conference and human chain in Dhaka, jointly organised by the Editors' Council and Newspaper Owners' Association of Bangladesh (NOAB) held at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Dhaka, in protest against mob violence against mass media and other institutions across the country.
Representatives of various businesses, social, political, and cultural organisations joined the programmes in solidarity.
The senior journalist said, "All news organisations have an editorial policy and all of them have a stance. Just because some people did not agree with that, they tried to kill those whose opinions they did not agree with in a medieval way by setting fire to the organisations."
