The government’s disease monitoring agency, IEDCR, did not find the new strain of Covid-19, which is spreading in the UK, yet in Bangladesh, but is observing the situation.

“If something like that we get in Bangladesh, we’ll inform you all,” IEDCR’s principal scientific officer Dr ASM Alamgir Hossain told Bangladesh Post on Thursday.

A new variant of the pandemic virus, VUI–202012/01, has become a cause of global concern. It first originated in the UK and accounted for nearly 60 percent of all cases in London by mid-December. It is also thought to be 70 percent more transmissible than earlier versions of the coronavirus.  Scientists are still researching the effects, virulence and severity of the new strain, reports Hindustan Times.

“Virus mutation is normal and it’s common. Sometimes it gains strength and sometimes losses strength. We are observing every moment. So far, we can say there is no presence of this new strain in Bangladesh,” Dr Alamgir told Bangladesh Post.

Panic spread across the world after the recent new type of coronavirus found across the UK. In this situation, the European Union decided to cut off communication with Britain from last Sunday (December 20).

Recently, a growing number of countries including India have banned flights from the UK to protect their citizens from the new variant of fast-spreading coronavirus. More than 30 countries have halted flights with the UK.

The Bangladesh government has made it mandatory to remain in quarantine for seven days after arrival from the UK.
