International Court of Justice delivered its ruling on Myanmar’s treatment of its Rohingya Muslim minority. The court issued a set of legally binding obligations to ensure protection and safety of some 600,000 Rohingyas who are still residing in the country. The verdict also bound Myanmar from carrying out any acts of genocide against the Muslim minority of the country.

However, it is disconcerting news that just two days after the verdict was passed, the Myanmar army had resorted to killing innocent people. A report published in this daily informs that a Rohingya village had been brutally shelled without any reason or conflict by the Myanmar army. As a result of which two women had been killed and several others injured.

The international community

condemned Myanmar for its crime

 against humanity yet

its army audaciously

carries out these transgressions

Why such an act was carried out by the Myanmar army beggars description. However, one thing is certain that this was a clear violation of the verdict that was passed just a few days prior to the incident taking place. These kinds of senseless atrocities have been going on for long in Myanmar. The international community condemned Myanmar for its crimes against humanity yet its army audaciously carries out such transgressions.

What will the international community do now after Myanmar has again violated basic human rights and has failed to keep a leash on its military? Can this brazenness be brought to answer before the people? Will there be any punitive action against those who conducted the atrocity in the first place? These are some of the questions that are now circling the minds of conscious people. Whether they will be answered is yet to be seen.

It is high time that Bangladesh stalwartly negotiated the issue with Myanmar and found a sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis.
