The newly-appointed Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Md Shafiqul Islam on Sunday said if necessary, he himself will discharge duties of an officer-in-charge (OC) to make the police stations pro-people. He made the remarks while addressing a meet the press held at the DMP Media Centre in the capital.

The new DMP boss said, “Those who are working in the police stations, do not change their attitude towards people, me and our senior officers will seat in the police stations once a week and listen to the sufferings of the people.” “If police do not deal the public complaints properly, if citizens do not receive the desired service in police stations under my jurisdiction, I will take over the post of OC in that police station,” he vowed.

He further said, “I will personally attend to the necessities of people.” All activities in the police stations must be monitored, so that there is no case of harassment, he added. Shafiqul Islam said, "Immediately after taking charge, I held meetings with all OCs and deputy commissioners (DC) in the capital. They have been given necessary and strict instructions regarding monitoring.”

“We must take necessary measures to ensure that mass people are able to overcome their fear of law enforcement officials,” he continued. He said, “We must also ensure that any person can file a case or a general diary without getting harassed or victimized at police stations. The feeling of getting co-operation from the police must be invoked in the person when he leaves the police station"

"We have to keep an eye on the police stations so that no one becomes a victim of harassment, extortion, or needs to resort to bribery in exchange of police service. Action will be taken if any complaint arises against any person," he added.
