Singer Shayantani Twisha learned singing at a very early age. She is the main vocalist of the band ‘Ucertainty Principle’. In addition to singing, she is working as the Head of PR, Media and Communication at a private company. Md Saifuddin Al Quaderi writes about their conversation after talking about singing and various other issues.
Have you thought about any new songs?
We are currently working on our first album and as such we are creating the songs and also shooting music videos after which we upload it on social media. So far four of our songs have been released in a similar way and two more are in the pipeline.
One of which is ‘unicorn’ and the other one is Rabindra Sangeet fusion ‘Sokatore Oi’. We had released the latter one earlier but that was very rough we will release it once again in a proper way.
You sang a Rabindra Sangeet fusion a few days ago. What type of response did you get for it?
We are always trying to perfect our fusions. In January we did a fusion of ‘Tomar Khola Hawa’ and before that last year we did ‘Potho Hara’, both songs are fusions and they did really well.
We got great response from the public. People liked the songs very much and also shared on their social media. Many people contacted us personally and praised our work.
Do you want to build a solo career other than your band?
I am a person who likes to sing and I will continue singing whether I am with a band or not. I am currently the vocalist of the band ‘Uncertainty Priciple’.
But I don’t differentiate between singing with a band or solo. I have collaborated with other bands as well and have also performed solo on several occasions. I don’t see it in a different way. I am a person who likes to sing and will continue to do so.
All the original songs you have sung are in English. Do you plan on making any original title in Bengali?
The main reason that all the original songs are in English is because I am the only lyricist in the band. I write in English because if I write something silly that doesn’t sound so silly when mixed with tune and can be easily made into a song.
Other than that I find Bengali to be very difficult. The books that we have read since childhood – Rabindranath, Nazrul, Jibanada Das, Sukumar Ray, Satyajit Ray, Lila Majumdar, Upendrakishore, Samaresh, Bibhutibhushan the list goes on and on. After reading their works, I cannot get myself the courage to write something in Bengali.
I also have an insecurity about Bengali and if I someday can overcome this then I will definitely write Bengali songs. If that day comes then I will think my life to be a success.
How are you spending your time during this pandemic?
During this lockdown I have been working from home. Other than that I am spending time with my family my father and grandmother.
But something new that I have done is that I have learned guitar for the first time in my life. I learned the cords and tried practicing a few songs on it as well. I think everyone should try picking up something new at this time rather than becoming bored and frustrated.
Other than being a singer you are also the chief of company’s marketing department. How has your experience been combining the two?
I am working as the Head of PR, Media and Communication of a company. This is my main identity in a professional sphere. Singing is not my primary profession.
But my dream is to become a singer one day and live through singing. Since that is not possible I have to work.
Also, one of our band members is from my office and another is from my previous workplace. So the balance between work and music happens automatically.
What do you want to do first when the coronavirus period ends?
First I want to finish the work that is pending of our album. I want to finish the shooting of music videos that are left. We planned to finish all 12 songs and launch the album by the end of this year. We are uncertain as to when we might be able to launch the album after the lockdown ends.
