A Dhaka court has granted a two-day remand for Fahim Al Hasan, the husband of Jahangirnagar University student Sharmin Jahan, in a murder case.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Mahfuzur Rahman passed the order on Tuesday after a hearing. Fahim is a fourth-year student of the Economics Department at Dhaka College.
On March 15, Sharmin Jahan, a student of the 51st batch of the Public Administration Department at Jahangirnagar University, was found critically injured at a residence in the Islamnagar area adjacent to the campus. She was taken to hospital where doctors declared her dead.
On the same day, the victim’s uncle Monirul Islam filed a murder case with Ashulia Police Station. Police later arrested Fahim from the Islamnagar area that night.
The investigation officer, SI Shahiduzzaman of Ashulia Police Station, initially sought a five-day remand for the accused. On March 16, prosecution SI Biswajit Debnath argued in favour of the remand, while defence lawyer Syed Zahidul Islam sought cancellation of the remand and applied for bail.
As the investigation officer was not present during the earlier hearing, the court sent Fahim to jail and fixed March 24 for the remand hearing.
On Tuesday, Fahim was produced before the court and the investigation officer was also present. The defence again sought bail, while the prosecution pressed for remand.
After hearing both sides, the court granted a two-day remand.
According to the case statement, Fahim and Sharmin had married secretly on June 24 last year and had been living in a rented house in Islamnagar, Ashulia. Since their marriage, they had been experiencing ongoing disputes over family matters.
It is alleged that between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm on March 15, Fahim, along with accomplices, attacked Sharmin with sharp weapons, inflicting fatal injuries to her head and forehead before fleeing the scene.
Family members later rescued her in a bloodied condition and took her to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar, where doctors pronounced her dead.
