Residents of Nekmorod union in Ranisankail upazila of Thakurgaon on Wednesday formed a human chain to demand the upgrade of Nekmorod Sub-Health Center to a 20-bed hospital with an emergency department.

The human chain, organized by the voluntary organization Shuvo Shakti Society, was held at the Nekmorod intersection on Wednesday noon. Local businessmen, cultural activists, politicians, teachers, students, and people from various walks of life participated in the event.

Advocate Mehedi Hasan Shuvo, a lawyer at the Bangladesh Supreme Court, Talukdar Shahjalal Jewel, Principal of Nekmorod Ideal School and College, journalist Ahmed Ishmam, and businessman Ahsan Habib Shanto, among others spoke during the programme.

In their speeches, they highlighted that Nekmorod Bazaar is located between Baliadangi and Haripur upazilas. People from four unions have to travel at least 20 kilometers to reach the upazila health complex in case of accidents or illness. This often leads to delays in receiving treatment, resulting in preventable deaths.

The speakers pointed out that the Nekmorod Sub-Health Center already has a building. If it is upgraded to a 20-bed hospital with an emergency department and if necessary doctors and staffs are appointed there, it would ensure medical services for the residents of the four unions.

They urged authorities to take prompt action to upgrade the health center to meet the community's healthcare needs.
