Hundreds of students and locals formed a human chain at Rayer Bazar area at Hajaribagh in the capital on Thursday protesting proposed construction of a Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP) in the locality by Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA).

At least one thousand students from different educational institutions along with local dignitaries and common people participated in the human chain.  During the programme, speakers said, “If WASA constructs STP at this over-populated area, it will be a serious threat to the environment. Besides, many establishments including different educational institutions, business entities and hospitals will be closed.”

To protect those establishments, they urged the authorities concerned to build the STP at Kallyanpur, which was determined earlier. They also announced from the programme that if Dhaka WASA does not take aside the STP project to another area, they will go for bigger movement.    Business Leader Shahin Ahmed, President of Panchayat Committee Amzad Sardar, Vice-President Mohammad Jashim Uddin, among others dignified persons of the locality, were also present.
