Huge gold, foreign cigarettes seized in Ctg airport

The Customs authorities have seized 70 gold bars and 7,183 cartons of various brands of cigarettes from the toilet of Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram on Friday. Members of customs intelligence and investigation seized 70 gold bars worth about Tk 4 crore from the toilet of the second floor of the airport on Friday.

Manager of the airport Wing Commander Sarwar-E-Zaman confirmed the matter. He said that on a tip-off, the officials recovered the gold bars, weighing 8.17 kg, from the toilet in an abandoned condition. Legal action was taken according to the customs law, he added. Meanwhile, the Customs intelligence and investigation officials today seized 7,183 cartons of foreign-made cigarettes from 29 passengers of a Bangladesh Biman flight at Shah Amanat International Airport here this morning.

On a tip-off, the officials recovered the 7,183 cartons foreign brand cigarette worth about Taka 1.44 crore from 29 separate shopping bags from a flight which came from Madina this morning, said Assistant Commissioner of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) Mohammad Readul Islam. He said the passengers detained for interrogation.
