In Maharajpur Union of Chapainawabganj Sadar Upazila, the husband and his family have been accused of torturing and beating the housewife for a long time without receiving the dowry money.
Chandni Khatun, 25, daughter of Md Emraj Sheikh of Maharajpur Peonpara area, hair was cut her hair with scissors on Wednesday afternoon to insult and defame her.
Chandni Khatun, a mother of one, filed a case against her husband Rabiul Islam, father-in-law Israfil Sheikh and mother-in-law Jaili Begum at Sadar Model Police Station on Thursday.
According to the case file and Chandni's family sources, Mohammad Rabiul Islam (35), son of Israfil Sheikh of the same village, got married to Chandni 5 years ago with the consent of the family.
Since the marriage, Rabiul and his family have been pressuring Chandni and her family to demand dowry at different times. Rabiul and his father Israfil Sheikh and mother Zaili Begum demanded a dowry of Rs 2 lakh after one year of marriage.
Then Chandni's parents paid 50,000 taka considering her daughter's happiness. Swami Rabiul Islam started torturing her physically and mentally at different times for the remaining Tk 150,000. Chandni Khatun, a victim of torture, said that at different times, her husband Rabiul Islam used to beat her after returning home at night demanding money for various reasons. I stayed at my father's house for a long time due to torture.
When I went to my father-in-law's house last Wednesday, my father-in-law, mother-in-law and husband listened to me all day. My day laborer father told me that it was not possible to pay 1 lakh 50 thousand taka. At one stage, her husband Rabiul Islam cut her hair with scissors to insult and humiliate her. Rabiul and his family could not be reached for comment.
Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mozaffar Hossain said the case was taken up on Thursday afternoon. Later, Rabiul's mother Jaili Begum was arrested. Police are investigating the incident and trying to arrest the rest of the accused.
