We laud Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for providing over 18,566 more houses to the homeless and landless families across the country as Eid gifts ahead of Eid-ul-Azha under the government’s housing programme Ashrayan-2 project. Earlier, Sheikh Hasina distributed 63,999 houses in the first phase, 53,330 in the second phase, 59,133 in the third phase and 39,365 in the fourth phase of the Ashrayan-2 Prakalpa across the country.

After receiving keys and deeds of new houses, the homeless and landless people were overwhelmed with joy and happiness as they got permanent addresses in Cox's Bazar and Bhola districts. They expressed gratitude to Sheikh Hasina for making true their dreams of having their own home.

These homeless people used to lead a very miserable life with their small earnings.  It was very difficult for them to live in the houses of their poor relatives with family members.

The homless people of the country will now lead a dignified life, forgetting the plight and negligence they suffered in the past.

We thank the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government for its humanitarian efforts to provide houses with modern facilities to the homeless families across the country. These hapless people now don’t have to think about their food, clothing, treatment and education.

The people, who got homes in remote areas, will have a developed life as the government’s main purpose is to eliminate poverty and inequality. They will also enjoy the advantages of information technology which is providing a developed and better life to them.

They can also avail services like digital center payment, online banking, overseas job application, vaccine registration, public exam results, university admission, passport application, visa verification and tracking, online driving licence application and birth registration. Besides, they will enjoy services like health information, agricultural information, market information, information about law enforcing agencies, information about admission test in all levels (school, university etc and information related to public examinations.

In this regard, electricity is playing the leading role in expanding villages with modern civic facilities. But when the government is working hard to provide a developed and better life to the grassroots people, some unscrupulous officials and employees reportedly got  involved in irregularities in collaboration with the local influential middleme, intensifying the sufferings of people.

Instead of discharging their duties, these corrupt officials and employees in association with the local public representatives like some lawmakers, upazila chairmen, union parishad chairmen are reportedly grabbing government lands, rivers, forest lands, hills and natural water-bodies. Even they are also grabbing playgrounds and open spaces where kids play.

We have noticed that some homeless people are being deprived of houses. If field-level government officials do not perform their responsibilities to ensure people’s welfare, the fate of the distressed and  underprivileged people will  remain unchanged.

The authorities concerned, particularly the deputy commissioners and upazila nirbahi officers, must get tough on corrupt officials and employees and local influential middlemen so that noone dares to commit such crimes. The government officials are the servants of the people so they must carry out their responsibilities as the people’s servants to ensure the delivery of the government services at people’s doorsteps.

We believe the government is determined to ensure socio-economic development of the  people and improve their lives with allout efforts based on the the spirit and ideology of the Liberation War. The houses being given free of costs under the Ashrayan projects are bringing self-dignity and self-respect for the homeless people. Bangladesh continues to make tremendous progress under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina as her government is working to ensure basic rights of the people, food, clothing, accommodation, treatment and education.
