House, flat owners to be brought under tax net

Published : 27 Oct 2022 09:49 PM

Every household and individual house owner in the capital would be brought under the income tax net.

To find out information on the exact number of the houses and flats and business establishments, an agreement with Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC) has been signed.

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Abu Hena Md Rahmatul Munim said this after signing a memorandum of understanding with DPDC on the exchange of information on Thursday.

NBR Chairman said, “We want to bring every flat and house owner in Dhaka city under income tax return. I want to know the information about how many houses, flats and business establishments are there. As we want to bring them under the tax return that’s why we have signed an agreement with DPDC. Based on their given information we will do rest of our work.”

He said that NBR thinks that the owner of one or more houses and flats in Dhaka city has the ability to file returns. Many of them do not file returns and are out of tax net. DPDC meters are fixed in the name of the owner of one or more houses or flats.

The exchange of mutual information with DPDC will help to increase the revenue income with the increase in tax return. In this regard, information sharing of ETIN database will serve as a milestone. In particular, the company taxpayers will be taxed based on accurate information instead of tax assessment based on assumptions. Undue liability and harassment will also be reduced, according to NBR.

NBR has already signed MoUs with Election Commission (EC), BRTA, BFIU, Directorate of National Savings, BEPZA, IBUS Software (Ministry of Finance) for identification of new taxpayers, accurate assessment of applicable taxes and exchange of mutual information for the purpose of increasing tax net.

As a result, it is helping to assure getting and sending proper information to the correct taxpayers, in the same way, greater transparency and dynamism have been ensured in the tax collection process of the officials.

NBR member (Tax Information Management and Service) Mohammad Zahid Hasan presided over the event. Senior officials including Habibur Rahman and DPDC MD Engineer Bikas Dewan were present at the signing ceremony.
