Hizb ut-Tahrir top leader arrested

Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit (CTTC) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested one of the top leaders of Hizb ut-Tahrir, a banned militant organization, from Bashundhara area in the capital on Tuesday.

The arrestee was identified as Imtiaz Selim, an active leader of the banned organisation.

Md Asaduzzaman, Chief of CTTC, said arrested Imtiaz Selim’s organizational alias is Imadul Amin. He is an officer of a multinational company in the country. He is leading the top level of the militant organization for a long time under the guise of this official identity. He has been working as a policy maker for Hizb ut-Tahrir in parallel with his professional identity.

The police official said Imtiaz Selim, as a speaker in two other online conferences on September 30 and December 3, 2021, denied democracy and the existing laws of the country.

After graduation, Imtiaz joined Hizb ut-Tahrir through a friend. He was first caught by police in 2010. After getting out of jail, Imtiaz spent a year in Australia. Later he sat in an important position of the militant organisation through merit.

Basically, his main responsibility was to target university students and make them members of the party.

He used to communicate with members of Hizb ut-Tahrir through special app and encrypted app. Besides, he was continuing the activities in coordination with the central leaders using various strategies. In recent times, he was directly involved in various activities including anti-government and anti-national posters, speeches in mosques and he used to speak as a coordinator in online conferences.
