National cricket team’s Test record against Sri Lanka are shambolic to say the least. The Tigers played 20 tests matches so far against the Lankan Lions. They lost 15 encounters, won one and drew three matches, so, their success is not countable. It is only 5.89 per cent.
Bangladesh first played against the islanders on September 6, 2001 at P. Sara Oval Stadium. That was Asian Test Championship. Bangladesh lost to Sri Lanka by an innings and 137 runs.
In 2002, Tigers faced Lions in a bilateral series. They played two Tests and lost both. In the first test that was held P. Sara Oval Stadium, Colombo on July 21-23, Khaled Masud & Co lost by an innings and 196 runs. In the second test staged at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground, Colombo, Sri Lanka won over Tigers by 288 runs.
After three-year Bangladesh again faced Lankans in two Test series and the results were the same. Tigers lost to Lankans by 0-2. In 2005, 2007, 2008, 2012 and 2013 Bangladesh failed to be competitive with Sri Lanka.
Bangladesh won over Sri Lanka by four wickets on March 17, 2017 at the P. Sara Oval, Colombo. That was historic day for Bangladesh cricket. Bangladesh won for the first time in Sri Lankan ground. Tigers scored 467 from 134.1 overs. Middle order batsman Shakib Al- Hasan made 116 runs from 159 deliveries. The two-match series was 1-1 drawn.
The two sides last met with each other in 2018. The islanders visited to Bangladesh and played two test matches series. Their first outing was on January 31 at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chattogram. The match was drawn. They lost second test that was held at the Sher-e- Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur, and Dhaka.
