Mujibnagar in Meherpur is known as the rising ground of independence in the history of the Liberation War. The first government of Bangladesh, known as the Mujibnagar government, took the first pledge on 17th April, at Vaidyanathtala in Meherpur. It is through this that the formal journey of the Liberation War began.

Therefore, on the 17th of April every year many celebrations are held on the occasion of the historic Mujibnagar Day. However, Mujibnagar Day celebrations are being affected in the wake of the coronavirus. Therefore, the Meherpur district administration has shortened the programme for this year's Mujibnagar Day observance for additional precaution.

As part of the programme today, the cannon will be launched 31 times and the national flag will be raised at sunrise. A floral wreath will be offered on behalf of the Freedom Fighters Ministry and then Minister of State for Public Administration Farhad Hossain. Later, floral offerings will be made on behalf of the District Administration, District Police, Bangladesh Awami League and other organizations, and other departments respectively at the altar of the Mujibnagar Memorial.

It should be noted that in the light of the outbreak of coronavirus, the district administration has strongly discouraged any person from any district other than Meherpur to come to Mujibnagar on this Mujibnagar Day in order to properly comply with the instructions given by Hon'ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
