27 freedom fighters, two villagers sacrificed their lives

The people of Jhenaidah is going to observe 51st death anniversary of 27 martyrs who sacrificed their lives to liberate upon the sovereignty of Bangladesh at Kamanna village of Shailkupa upazila in Jhenaidah in the early morning of November 26 in 1971.

Milad mahfil, discussion meeting, distribution of foods and show honor to the family members of the martyrs will be the part of the celebration like past years. LOcal freedom fighters and Kamanna 27 Shahid Srity Sangha jointly organizing the event.

One of the organizers of the programme freedom fighter Qamruzzaman Lal said presided over by acting upazila Nirbahi officer (UNO), as well as the convener of Bangladesh Muktijo­ddha Sangshad Shailkupa upazila unit command Boni Amin, Jhenaidah-1 constituency lawmaker also president of ruling Awami League Jhenaidah district unit Abdul Hyee will grace the chair as chief guest. Shailkupa upazila Parishad chairman M Abdul Hakim Ahmed, ex commander of the sangshad Shailkupa unit command Rahmat Ali Mantu and Sripur upazila unit command ex commander Biswas Ikram Ali will participate as special guests.

According to locals and some freedom fighters, about 35 freedom fighters, most of them belings to Hazipur area in Magura Sadar were killed in the two-storied tin-shed house of Madhab Bhowmik at Kamanna in the early hours of November 26. 

The house is now owned by some KB Zaman alias Panu Kazi.

They said one of plain cloth collaborates of occupied Pakistani forces, local schoolteacher had informed the Rajakar camp at Shailkupa thana headquarters about the presence of the freedom fighters at Kamanna.  Over 300 brutal occupation forces and their collaborators from Shailkupa, Jhenaidah and Magura with huge arms and ammunitions arrived at Kamanna and cordoned the whole area. 

They killed Momin, Kader, Shahidul Islam, Soleman, Abdur Razzaque, Abdul Wahed, Riyad, Alamgir Hossain, Abdul Motaleb, Ali Hossain, Sariful Islam, Anisur Rahman, Alimuzzaman, Tajul Islam, Maniruzzaman, Nasim, Razzaque-2, Kawser Ali, Abdul Malek, Abdul Aziz, Akbar Hossain, Selim, Hossain, Rashed, Golzer Ahmed, Adhir and Gour with gunshots and charging bayonets in the house. 

Some of them were also killed in the house of nearby Kiron Shikder. Remaining youths managed to leave the scene during the night anyhow. A few of the bullet injured including Abdur Rahman of Sripur was treated in the house of Kazi Serajul Islam where his aunt Sona Kazi and her daughter Benu Kazi had provided treatment for a couple of days. 

Some Phani Bhushan Shikder was gunned down on the bank of river Kumar when he was responding natural call, while house wife Ranga Nessa received bullet hit and died on the spot when she went to clean rice in the nearby river water for her newly wedded son in law in the early hours of the day.

Heroic freedom fighter Biswas Lutfar Rahman of village Baroihuda, who had retired as a joint commissioner (JC) of the election commission (EC) along with his associates, had dug six mass graves and dumped 27 martyred there. Later an eye-catching monument was constructed there to show respect to the freedom fighters. But the name of Ranga Nessa, who was gunned down by the brutal forces in the morning, was mistakenly wrote at the serial number 28 as a freedom fighter. The freedom fighters had demanded removing the name and enlist it as a martyr, not a freedom fighter.
