Hindu woman beaten for chewing betel leaf in Ramadan

A Hindu woman has been severely beaten at Natehra village under Hajiganj upazila in Chandpur district for chewing betel leaf in the fasting month of Ramadan.

Witnesses said one Nurul Amin brutally beat up his neighbor Pratibha Rani with a bamboo stick at Natehra village under No 7 Barkul union on Tuesday for chewing betel leaf in Ramadan.

Pankaj Kumar Dey, Additional Superintend of Police (Hajiganj circle), told the Bangladesh Post “We have visited the spot and already talked to the victim. She is undergoing treatment at Chandpur 

Sadar Hospital.” “A case was filed in connection with the incident. The accused fled after the incident. We are conducting drives to arrest him,” he added.

According to the locals, Nurul Amin is the son of Md Kalimuddin Gazi, a resident of Natehra village. He brutally beat her up with a bamboo stick and strangled his throat in an attempt to kill her, they said.

Hearing Pratibha Rani’s screams, people from the neighborhood came and took her to Hajiganj Upazila Health Complex. As Pratibha’s condition deteriorated, the doctors referred her to Chandpur Sadar Hospital. 

Local Muslims burst into anger over assaulting the Hindu woman. They said that Ramadan is for Muslims and not for Hindus and therefore, Nurul Amin’s behaviour was act of barbarism. They demanded immediate arrest and puishment of Nurul Amin.
