In order to build high-rise buildings, education, health, playgrounds and recreation centers and other civic services must be ensured for those who will be there, said Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Md. Tajul Islam.

He was speaking as the chief guest at a discussion meeting on the occasion of 'World Diabetes Day-2021' organized by Bangladesh Diabetic Association at Bardem Hospital Auditorium in the capital on Sunday.

The minister said, “The number of people living in Dhaka city is more than any other city in the world. That is why it is not possible to ensure the civic service due to the people of the capital. Regular exercise is necessary for good health but there are not enough playgrounds, parks which we do not have. Clinics-hospitals, education, recreation centers, playgrounds are all things we need to ensure.”

“Many people are demanding the inclusion of high-rise buildings in DAP. But people who will live in high buildings, they will need roads, parks, educational institutions, health care and other necessary services. We can construct high rise building but if there is traffic jam on the road and no playground our diabetic will increase,” added the minster.

Md. Tajul Islam said, “There is some crisis of fields and parks against our population. However, the new DAP has specified ample space for parks and fields. If DAP is implemented, such crisis will end. Besides, in order to build Dhaka as a modern-looking and livable city, everything has to be planned.”

The local government minister called for a change in eating habits and regular exercise in order to live a healthy and vigorous life to stay free from various diseases including diabetes. “We need to change our lifestyle, if we want to live longer we must have to reduce intake of carbohydrates related food. In this case I will recommend eating organic food,” said Md. Tajul Islam.

The minister said consumption has increased as per capita income or capacity has increased. This has become a challenge to deal with waste management. Failure to address these challenges will result in environmental as well as human health risks. Therefore, special initiatives have been taken for proper waste management.

President of Bangladesh Diabetic Association and National Professor AK Azad Khan presided over the program while BARDEM director Dr. Faruk Pathan presented the keynote paper.
