Bangladesh registered 230 more deaths in 24 hours from Covid-19 till 8am Sunday, breaking the earlier record of single-day death toll on July 9. A total of 212 people died of Covid-19 on that day. The total number of deaths has reached 16,419 with the latest figure.
This is the highest number of deaths recorded in the span of a single day since March 8, when the first case of coronavirus was detected.
Prof Dr Mohammod Robed Amin, spokesperson of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) in a regular bulletin of the department on Sunday said that if the situation does not get under control in the next two weeks and the current situation continues, there will be crisis of beds in hospitals.
He further said that if the current situation continues, the country might witness 14 to 15 thousand infections daily in the next few days.
According to the department of health 1,277 people have died from July 4 to July 10.
The country recorded 11,874 new infections in the meantime taking the total number of people infected to 10,21,189 according to a press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Sunday.
The death rate now stands at 1.61 percent in the country, added the release.
The current positivity rate stands at 29.67 percent and the overall positivity rate stands at 14.65 percent.
Among the 230 deceased, 133 were men, and 97 were women. Of the victims, 211 died in different hospitals across the country and 19 others died at home.
66 of the deceased were from the Khulna division, 56 from Dhaka, 39 from Chattogram, 26 from Rajshahi, 22 from Rangpur, eight each from Barisal and Sylhet and five were from Mymensingh division.
A total of 39,860 samples were tested across the country till 8am Sunday.
During this period 6,362 Covid-19 patients have recovered. Up until now, a total of 8,74,501 people have recovered from the virus and the recovery rate stands at 85.64 percent.
As of Sunday, 4,045,474 people died of Covid-19 across the world and 187,392,659 have been infected so far, according to Worldometer.
Dr Md Shamsul Haque, line director at the Directorate General of Health Services said on Sunday that vaccination with Sinopharm will start in district and upazila hospitals of the country from Monday. Moderna vaccine will be administered from Tuesday in City Corporation hospitals.
