BGMEA President Faruque Hasan on Wednesday said “If we can develop high-value fashionable garments using our locally produced heritage fabrics and link them to the export market, it will create opportunities for our sector with respect to diversification”.

He said this will not only help Bangladesh to promote its cultural heritage on the global stage but it would also create a positive impact on our economy by creating new employment and protecting the livelihood of our weavers.

He was addressing the closing ceremony of the project titled” Creating High End Fashion Product Using Local Heritage Material” at BGMEA office, Uttara in the capital.

Farul pointed out that It will also give a huge milage since sustainability is the core concern of the global fashion industry nowadays and we are also working to align ourselves with global norms and rules.

“The heritage textile materials we have in our country are priceless. Over the years, the excellent craftsmanship of brilliant local artisans has flourished in many unique fabrics like Musline, Jamdani, Khadi, Rajshahi Silk, Monipuri etc. which has built an iconic image of Bangladeshi culture and tradition across the globe”, Faruque added.

BGMEA being an association of largest manufacturing sector in Bangladesh is taking all-out approach to unleash the power of our country's rich cultural heritage in the global arena.

After achieving the milestone of 45 billion dollars RMG export in 2022, we have taken a strategic vision to achieve 100 billion dollars apparel export by 2030.

To pursue this vision and increase our share in the global market, we are working to make ourselves more advanced in terms of product and fabric diversification, product sophistication, new design development, value addition, and technological up-gradation.

He congratulates all the members of the product development team who have put in enormous effort to develop the prototypes of fusion products using the local heritage material of Bangladesh.

He also lauded Anadil Johnson for her excellent work to make this project successful.

Faruque informed that we are working on another project titled “Project GEMA” where we have engaged with us a renowned Bangladeshi designer Ms. Kuhu Plamondon. Kuhu is currently working with some of aspiring fashion designers of 10 different factories.

The team is working with Muslin fabric and our local heritage motifs such as waterlily, royal Bengal tiger, rickshaw paint and etc.

Under this project, BGMEA has provided training to total 160 participants in 8 batches. Among the participants, 75 from the RMG factory, , 20 from BUFT, 17 from BUTEX, 6 from Shanto-Mariam University of Creative Technology, 15 from BKMEA, 5 from AFDB and 19 local weavers.

During the training program, our participants have prepared some excellent mood boards which we have displayed in the lobby. These mood boards represent how the heritage and culture can be used to design blended luxury items.
