In today’s technologically advancing world, access to the internet is as basic and important as access to electricity was in past.

It augurs well that ten crore rural people of the country are going to get high-speed internet access by the end of this year. we think it is a time befitting initiative to graduate us from a backward level to a high status to compete in technological arena.

Reportedly, Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC) under the Department of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) undertook the Info Sarkar-3 project in 2016 to provide 2,600 broadband internet services at the Union Parishad level in this regard.

As reported by this daily on Tuesday, the project deadline is June 2021. However, it is estimated that 90 per cent of the works will be completed by December this year.

The government has been working relentlessly to reach broadband internet to every knock and corner of the country. Kudos goes to the government as it has successfully connected 2400 unions with high-speed internet connectivity through optical fiber.

When given access to affordable broadband,

rural businesses restricted to local markets,

will be able to expand their market reach

across the nation and even the world

It needs no emphasising that Internet will make life easier for the rural people as it will ensure their access easy to necessary information. When given access to affordable broadband, people from remote corners of the country will get the chance to avail themselves of the online medical services and rural businesses limited to local markets will be able to expand their market reach across the nation and the world as well. Internet will also bring about the opportunity for direct access to education and health-care for rural residents who are otherwise forced to travel long distances for college courses and medical treatment. Also, farmers will gain real-time access to vital information such as crop prices or weather forecasts, and marketing opportunities through high-speed network. Government’s various initiatives to provide internet to every corner of the country is laudable, but at the same time we must educate the people about the wrong use of internet and cyber crimes.  The government also must ensure affordable internet services to the remote areas of the country.
