The High Court of Bangladesh has intervened in the recently concluded Bangladesh Film Artistes' Association (BFAA) election, suspending the victory declaration of Monowar Hossain Dipjol for the position of General Secretary. The court order came in response to a petition filed by actress Nipun Akter, who contested against Dipjol in the election held on April 19.
Nipun Akter's legal representative, Advocate Polash Chandra Roy, presented the writ petition on her behalf, alleging irregularities in the election process. The court, after hearing the petition, issued a rule and called for an investigation into the matter. Senior lawyer Shah Monjurul Hoque represented Nipun during the court proceedings.
The BFAA election, which saw a close competition between the panels led by Misha Sawdagar and Monowar Hossain Dipjol against Mahmud Koli and Nipun Akter, concluded with Dipjol securing the General Secretary position with a narrow margin of 16 votes. However, Nipun's challenge to the election results has sparked controversy within the film community.
In response to the court's decision, Monowar Hossain Dipjol stated, "I have always respected the law. Since the High Court has issued an order, I have nothing to comment on." He further mentioned plans to discuss the matter with the current committee and consider approaching the chamber judge for further action.
Misha Sawdagar emerged victorious in the election, securing 265 votes, while Monowar Hossain Dipjol clinched the General Secretary position with 225 votes. Nipun Akter, who initially accepted the election results and congratulated the winners, later took legal action against the newly appointed committee. Nipun's unexpected move has drawn criticism from both the film fraternity and audiences. The suspension of the election results underscores the importance of fair and transparent electoral processes in professional associations like the BFAA. The court's intervention aims to ensure justice and uphold the integrity of the democratic process within the Bangladeshi film industry.
