Bangladesh,  a country still developing and is soon to become a middle income country, is still suffering under the heavy burden of poverty. This bane towards development and progress is something that the government has been trying to address. To this end Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called upon the affluent of the country to lend a hand to the destitute.

As per a report published in this daily, eighty senior secretaries personally joined the government’s effort to provide housing to homeless people in Mujib Borsho and gifted a total of 160 houses to the people.

It augurs well as we get to see government officials who are in a position of responsibility turn towards helping their fellow countrymen of their own accord. Also, we believe that with time more and more affluent people will come forth to lend a hand in removing poverty from the lives of the people.

The report also elaborated on government's initiative named “Amar Bari, Amar Khamar” and also the Prime Minister’s emphasis on the importance of not leaving an inch of land uncultivated. As our country is more dependent on agriculture, therefore, it is imperative to develop this sector and also give opportunity to the people who are underprivileged to have a healthy life. Crop diversity is one option that can help alleviate poverty to a large extent. Another option is to search for more foreign markets for our agri produces.

Above all, the initiative here is a well timed one where the country’s people will be supported by each other, by themselves. We hope the long lasting problem of poverty will be removed and make way for a standardised way of living for all.
