Hefazat-e-Islam Amir Mohibullah Babunagari has called Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami a "hypocrite Islamic party."

He made the comment during a discussion meeting held on Monday afternoon at Nazirhat in Fatikchhari upazila of Chattogram.

The event, titled "The Role of Islamic Scholars in Shaping the Future of Fatikchhari", was organised at a local community centre by a group named "The Scholars and Sufi Leaders of Greater Fatikchhari."

During his speech, Babunagari said, "Jamaat-e-Islami is a hypocrite Islamic party; it is not an authentic one. I'm not the only one saying this -- our respected elders have said so as well. Jamaat-e-Islami follows the Islam of Maududi, whereas we follow the Islam of Madinah. Practising Maududi's Islam puts one's faith at risk."

He further said, "They do not aim to establish the Islam of Madinah, but rather Maududi's version of Islam. We do not consider Jamaat-e-Islami to be an Islamic party."

The event was conducted by Hefazat leader Maulana Abu Maknun Mohammad Azizi and presided over by Maulana Shah Salauddin Nanupuri, Pir (spiritual leader) of Nanupur Obaidia Darbar Sharif.

Maulana Habibur Rahman, Sheikh Hosain Muhammad, Maulana Elias, Sheikh Hossain Mohammad Shahjahan Islamabadi, Maulana Junaid bin Jalal, Maulana Ayub Babunagari, Maulana Yahya, Maulana Irshad Bhujpuri, Maulana Mahmud Shah, Golam Rabbani, Maulana Hafiz Shoaheb, Maulana Mufti Khaled, Mujibur Rahman, and Maulana Noman, among others, spoke at the event.
