Heavy rain likely in coastal areas due to ‘Asani’

Heavy rainfall might occur in three divisions of the country due to the impact of cyclonic storm ‘Asani’. Moderately heavy (23-43mm) to very heavy (88mm or more) rainfall is likely in these areas.

The information was provided in the forecast of Bangladesh Meteorological Department on Monday.

According to the Meteorological Department, cyclone ‘Asani’ was located in the west-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas.

Due to the effect of ‘Asani’ moderate to heavy rainfall is likely in Khulna, Barisal and Chattogram divisions in the next 24 hours from 9 am Monday. 

According to the special notification issued by the Meteorological Department regarding the location of ‘Asani’ on Monday, maximum wind speed within 64 km of the severe cyclonic storm centre is about 89 kph. The speed of the cyclone is increasing up to 117kmh in the form of gusty winds. 

The sea will remain rough near the epicenter of the cyclone.

Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payramaritime ports have been asked to hoist distant warning signal No 2.

In addition, all fishing boats and trawlers stationed in the North Bay have been asked to remain near the coast and proceed cautiously. At the same time, they have been told not to wander in the deep sea.

‘Asani’, which is located in west-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas, is moving toward west-north.

The cyclone was stationed at 1,105 km southwest of Chattogram maritime port, 1,045 km southwest of Cox's Bazar maritime port, 1,015 km south-southwest of Mongla maritime port and 1,000 km south-southwest of Payra maritime port on Monday noon. 

The cyclonic storm might move toward the northwest, added the notification.
