Heavy rains yesterday and day before across the country welcomed the Bengali month of Ashar. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department forecasted more heavy rains in several parts of the country, including in Dhaka and Chattogram.

Abul Kalam, an official of the Meteorological Department, told Bangladesh Post that the impact of monsoon is active all over the country. As a result, heavy to very heavy rains may occur in Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal and Chattogram regions.

The meteorologist warned that there is a danger of landslides in the hilly areas of Chattogram division due to heavy rains.

“The hilly areas of Chattogram are more vulnerable during such weather. There are chances that heavy and continuous rainfall could lead to landslides in those areas,” he said.

He further said that the rain is likely to continue till tomorrow. It could gradually decrease after a few days. However, rain is likely to gain momentum again after the 22nd or 23rd of the month.

Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan, Executive Engineer of Flood Forecasting and Warning Center said that in the next 72 hours, heavy rainfall in Cox's Bazar and adjoining areas could cause rapid rise in water levels in the affected rivers.

“If the water levels rise significantly, there is a fear of flash flood in these areas. There are no warnings for flood up at the moment, however, warnings for heavy rainfall are up in some areas,” he said.

The weather forecast suggests that heavy rain is likely in Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal and Chittagong divisions today (Sunday).

The highest rainfall of 125 mm was recorded in Sitakunda on Friday, according to the Meteorological Department.

Till Saturday afternoon, 36 mm of rain has been recorded in Dhaka, 92 mm in Chittagong, 21 mm in Sylhet, 8 mm in Rajshahi, 63 mm in Faridpur, 74 mm in Chandpur, 106 mm in Sandwip, 81 mm in Teknaf, 47 mm in Khulna and 40 mm in Barisal.

Forecasts suggests light to moderate rainfall are likely with temporary gusts in most parts of Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna, Rajshahi and Barisal divisions and in many parts of Mymensingh, Rangpur and Sylhet divisions.

Meanwhile, the maritime warning signal number three has been asked to be taken down from at all the seaports of the country.
