Heavy rains crippled the life in Chattogram as most of the roads of different parts of the port city went under knee to waist-deep water due to Cyclone Remal causing immense hardship to the city dwellers on Monday.
The number of public transport was fewer while the rickshaw pullers charged commuters extra fare. The electricity connection was disrupted in many place of the city due to the stormy weather.
Several projects of Tk 11,000 crore are underway to mitigate the waterlogging problem in Chattogram. Around Tk 8,000 crore has already spent in this regard. However, many parts of Chattogram go under water during rain.
It started raining with gusty wind since Sunday night. While visiting several place on Monday, it was seen that Kapasgol, Bohaddarhat, Badurtola, Chak Bazar, Muradpur, 2 No. Gate, Wasar Mor, Tin Poler Matha, Mehedibag CDA Colony, Agrabad, Patenga and Halishahar Shulokbahar areas were flooded due to heavy rain. Akmal Ali Road of Patenga went under water.
Knee to belly-deep or chest-deep water at some places main roads of the city was seen on Monday. Many shops were shut due to waterlogging in the city due to downpour. The wholesale market of the city, Khatunganj, went under water. The city dwellers feared that the prices of the essentials may go high due to this.
Suman, a passenger, said the fair of the transport is three times higher than other days due to waterlogging. Rickshaw is now only option as there is a lack of public transports. However, the fair is three times more.
Many city dwellers expressed their dissatisfaction to Chittagong City Corporation and Chattogram Development Authority as several roads of the city go under water during rainfall.
Advocate Jaysree Nandi, resident of Baklia, said that he had to go to his office despite of waterlogging.
Patenga Met Office sources said cyclonic storm Remal hit the coast of Bangladesh on Sunday night. It has been raining due to Remal. It may rain on Tuesday as well. A total of 205.4 millimeter rain was recorded in 24 hours in Chattogram.
All primary and secondary level schools remained shut due to the cyclone and rain on Monday.
