A beggar, who set a rare example by giving away his savings to the government fund to help people who suffered due to coronavirus epidemic, has received a newly-built house and a shop as a special gift from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Nazim Uddin, who hails from Gandhigaon village in Jhenaigati upazila of Sherpur, received the keys of the house and the shop from Deputy Commissioner (DC) Anarkali Mahbub on Sunday.

Besides, Local Upazila Chairman SMA Warez Naeem also gave Nazim a battery run auto-rickshaw.

Upazila Chairman SMA Warez Naeem, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Rubel Mahmud, Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Joynal Abedin, Police Station OC Abu Bakar Siddique and others were present on the occasion.

On April 21, the beggar donated Tk 10,000 to the Upazila Nirbahi Officer's Relief Fund for food assistance to the unemployed. He saved the money in the last two years by begging to repair his broken home. Illustrated reports were published in various media. When the news of his donation came to the notice of the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, she was pleased with Nazim Uddin's generosity and arranged to set up a shop so that he can make a living from the land as well as a house from her own funds.

The land on which Nazim Uddin had been living on for so long was a piece of the government's khas land. Even Nazim Uddin did not know this till now. This khas land of the government has also been allotted in his name.

The government has allotted 15 decimal of the land in his name. The DC also set up a shop so that he never has to beg again. Besides, the local government will bear his treatment cost as per the direction of the Prime Minister. His sick daughter has already been treated.

After getting the house Nazim Uddin said, “I donated money for the coronavirus fund. I am very happy that the Prime Minister has given me a gift. I got a house and a shop. I don't want anything else. I pray that Allah grants the PM a long life. May Allah give her the opportunity to rule as long as she lives.”

Expressing his desire to see PM Sheikh Hasina, he added, “Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is a very kind person, my heart cries to see her. I got a house. I really want to greet her (Prime Minister) by touching her feet. When I see her, I will touch her feet and salute her.”

DC Anarkali Mahbub said, “We are all happy. On behalf of the Hon'ble Prime Minister, I handed over the keys of a house to our esteemed person Nazim Uddin.”

Regarding Nazim Uddin's desire to see Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the DC said, “I am not aware of this. If he wants to meet the Prime Minister, we can contact the authorities on his behalf.”
