Referring to the controversial Helena Jahangir’s IPTV journalism trade, the High Court has said, “What is happening in the country in the name of journalism? How many channels have emerged in the name of IPTV?”
The HC bench led by Justice M Enayetur Rahim made the remarks on Tuesday (August 3) during a hearing on misinformation about the court order in several newspapers, including Daily Purbakon published from Chattogram. The High Court expressed anger over the news published in the dailies.
At the same time, the HC bench told Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan, lawyer of Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), to ask the newspapers of Chattogram which had published wrong news about the court order to express their regret through rejoinder. The bench said that they will issue the next order in this regard on Wednesday (today).
However, Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan told the court that the Chattogram-based daily Purbakon has already apologized for the misreporting.
Based on an advocate-certificate issued by one Md Mazharul Haque, Dainik Purbokon, a Bangla daily of Chattogram, and some other newspapers of the district published report under the headline ‘High Court stays transfer order of the ACC official’. However, the High Court did not stay any transfer order regarding Deputy Assistant Director of the ACC’s Chattogram-2 office MD Sharif Uddin.
The news was brought to the notice of the court by a lawyer on Monday. Then the HC bench revealed the incident of misreporting and ordered the ACC to conduct an investigation. The court said, “No, we did not give any such order.”
A transfer order was issued for MD Sharif Uddin on June 17 this year.
The HC bench led by Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman on June 30 this year rejected a writ petition that sought stay on the transfer of Sharif Uddin. One Fozle Azim Mohammad Sibgatullah had filed the writ petition.
But a so called lawyer Md Mazharul Haque issued an advocate-certificate saying that the HC bench of Justice Enayetur Rahim on July 29 stayed the transfer order of Md Sharif Uddin and directed the authorities concerned to allow him to continue in the office for the next two weeks.
However, no lawyer named Md Mazharul Haque could be found in the members' list of the Supreme Court Bar Association.
