The High Court (HC) has sought explanation from the judge of a trial court for granting ad-interim bail to suspended deputy inspector general (DIG) for prisons of Sylhet division Partha Gopal Banik in a case filed over the recovery of Tk 80 lakh from his residence in Dhaka.

The High Court bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman issued the order on Monday (June 28) after hearing of an appeal filed by the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC).

The HC bench asked Judge Iqbal Hossain of Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-5 to submit a written explanation in seven working days on which ground his court granted ad-interim bail to Partha Gopal.

The HC bench also asked the authorities concerned of Channel-24, a private television channel, to submit before them within seven days a copy of the report that had questioned the Dhaka court order over granting the bail.

Lawyer Md Khurshid Alam Khan stood for the ACC. He said that Judge Md Iqbal Hossain on June 17 granted bail to Partha Gopal Banik in an ‘unusual manner’ although there are specific allegations against him.

The judge granted him bail until July 15 upon a bond of Tk 50,000 with two guarantors, one of whom must be a local guardian and the other a practicing lawyer.

The Channel-24 has published a report on ‘unusually’ granting bail to Partha Gopal, he said, adding that Partha Gopal got released from jail following the trial court’s order.

Earlier on Sunday, an appeal was filed with the HC seeking cancellation of bail granted to Partha Gopal Banik.

On July 28, 2019, the ACC arrested Partha Gopal Banik after interrogating him at the commission headquarters and seized Tk 80 lakh from his Kalabagan flat in Dhaka.
