The High Court (HC) on Wednesday issued a rule asking authorities concerned as to why it shall not grant bail to suspended Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) ward-30 councilor Erfan Salim in a case for allegedly assaulting an officer of Bangladesh navy last year.
A High Court division virtual bench of Justice Jahangir Hossain and Justice Md Badruzzaman passed the order after holding hearing on a plea for bail of the accused.
“The High Court asked the state to reply the rule within two weeks,” Deputy Attorney General Md Bashir Ullah said.
Erfan, son of lawmaker Haji Md Selim and his men allegedly assaulted Lt Wasif Ahmad Khan in the capital’s Kalabagan signal area on October 25, 2020 evening.
The navy officer filed the case against Erfan, his bodyguard Md Zahid, protocol officer AB Siddique Dipu, driver Mizanur Rahman and 2/3 unidentified persons.
Erfan, earlier, filed the plea for bail with Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court which was eventually rejected on December 27. Later, he filed the bail plea with the High Court.
