The High Court has asked Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus to surrender before the court within November 7. The court also directed the concerned authority not to arrest or harass him. A High Court bench comprising Justice Mainul Islam Chowdhury and Khodoker Diluruzzaman passed the order on Monday.
Barrister Rokon Uddin Mahmood conducted the hearing on behalf of Dr Younus. At that time Barrister Mostafizur Rahman assisted him. Deputy Attorney General Saifuddin Khaled took part in the hearing on behalf of the state. An arrest warrant has been issued against Bangladesh’s only Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus in a case filed over illegal sacking of three employees of Grameen Communications.
Dhaka 3rd Labour Court Chairman Rohibul Islam issued the warrant on Wednesday. Younus filed time petition with the High Court following the order. Three employees of Grameen Communication filed the case against it’s Chairman Dr Yunus and Managing Director Naznin Sultana and Deputy General Manager Khandaker Abu Abedin for sacking them illegally for their role in formation of trade union at their workplace.
The accused were asked to appear before the court on October 8. Court's Bench Officer Nuruzzaman said: “Dr Yunus did not appear before the court in due time, so the court issued the arrest warrant against him.” According to the case statement, three employees-- Emranul Haque, Shah Alam and Abdus Salam of Grameen Communications-- filed three separate cases against three including Dr. Younus for terminating them on charges of forming trade union at their workplace on July 3.
After the hearing, the third labour court issued the arrest warrant against Dr. Younus as he did not appear before the court during hearing and granted bail to Managing Director Naznin Sultana and Deputy-Director General Khadakar Abu Abedin.
