A writ petition has been filed with the High Court challenging the constitutional validity of Article 70 and seeking suspension of the schedule for the upcoming presidential election.
Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Yunus Ali Akand filed the petition on Thursday (13 August).
The Chief Election Commissioner, secretary of the Parliament Secretariat and other relevant officials have been made respondents in the petition.
The Election Commission announced the presidential election schedule on 6 August, setting 20 August as the date for voting.
Under the schedule, voting will be held in the Jatiya Sangsad chamber from 2pm to 5pm if more than one candidate remains in the race.
EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed announced the schedule, while Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin will serve as the returning officer.
Candidates were required to submit their nomination papers between 10am and 4pm on Thursday. The nominations will be scrutinised on 16 August, while 18 August is the deadline for withdrawing candidacies.
If multiple candidates remain after scrutiny and withdrawal, voting will take place in Parliament on 20 August.
The petition seeks judicial intervention over the constitutional provision and the election process ahead of the scheduled presidential vote.
