Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday held crucial talks at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing. The meeting was held at a critical juncture when Bangladesh is pursuing global communities to intensify pressure on Myanmar to resolve Rohingya crisis. China’s role is very crucial in this respect.
During the meeting, both leaders discussed on issues of mutual interests and agreed to work for strengthening the prevailing friendly relations. Calling China and Bangladesh traditionally friendly neighbours, Xi said that consolidating and developing well the strategic partnership of cooperation between China and Bangladesh is not only in line with common interests of the two countries and two peoples, but also conducive to the prosperity and stability in Asia as well as the opening and cooperation of the world.
The Chinese president reassured the Bangladesh PM of extending support to pursue Myanmar leaders to take back the first batch of Rohingyas in soonest possible time to mark the launching of the repatriation process. Xi Jinping acknowledged the issue to be a major crisis and said that the issue should be resolved as early as possible.
“The two leaders have agreed on solving the Rohingya problem fast and said it cannot be kept unresolved,” Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque told reporters after the. The foreign secretary said the Chinese president and the Bangladesh prime minister added that two years have passed after the signing of agreements to this effect.
“There is no disagreement among us on how the problem will be solved … the Rohingyas must go back to their homeland,” the foreign secretary quoted the two leaders as saying. Haque said the two leaders mentioned that the representatives of the two countries will work together in this regard and they will pursue “good will” to prevail on Myanmar for the repatriation of the Rohingyas.
