Harvard University was founded by the Massachusetts General Court in colonial Massachusetts on October 28, 1638, marking the birth of what would become one of the world’s most prestigious educational institutions. Named for its first patron, Puritan clergyman John Harvard, this institution commenced as an institution with a mission to train clergy but soon transformed into a secular, worldwide respected university. The institution’s commitment to scholarship and its outstanding influence have solidified its place as a leader in higher education.

Harvard had emerged as an elite academic institution among Boston’s cultural circles by the 19th century. The institution redefined itself, establishing several professional schools and evolving into an inclusive research university under the transformative presidency of Charles William Eliot. Harvard’s forward-thinking approach led to the creation of a range of academic programmes and its 1900 role as a member of the Association of American Universities, affirming its commitment to collaborative research and intellectual growth. The university further diversified during the leadership of James B Conant through the Great Depression and World War II, welcoming a broader demographic and fostering a community of varied perspectives.

The university’s structure now includes ten faculties, alongside the Harvard Radcliffe Institute and offers diverse disciplines spanning the arts, sciences and professional studies. The institution provides a unique educational environment backed by robust resources such as the Harvard library, the world’s largest academic library with over twenty million volumes, with its primary campus centered on the iconic Harvard Yard in Cambridge and additional campuses in Boston.

The institution’s widespread endowment, valued at over $50 billion, empowers it to fund pioneering research, financial assistance and initiatives with global impact.

Harvard alumni, faculty and researchers have influenced various fields significantly like science, management, business and the arts. Prominent alumni include several US presidents, many Nobel laureates and founders of major global enterprises. Collectively, they have achieved an impressive array of accolades, such as, Pulitzer prizes, Fields Medals and Olympic medals, underlining Harvard’s tradition of excellence.
