Haor land grabbing rampant in Moheshpur, farmers in despair

Some influential persons identifying themselves as politicians dug over a hundred on ponds on government beel in bordering Moheshpur upazila in Jhenaidah district. Locals had demanded demolishing the illegally dug ponds at no delay, said the locals. They have been digging the ponds with excavators illegally for years.

Locals said Dobila beel, a huge water body of the government was flowing on 376 acres of land over Huda Azampur, Maladharpur and Adampur villages of Azampur union. The  same was given lease to Moheshpur Poura Matsyajibi Samity for a thrre years term. But the so called local fishermen community had given the beel lease to some Abdul Jalil ignoring the government norms for sub leasing the public property. Since then the supporters of Abdul Jalil and others have been digging ponds on the beel with powerful vaccu machine one after another. The local administration has been playing the role of witness, they said.

According to the locals, influential Ibrahim Hossain and Anwar Hossain, both belongs to ruling party have been allegedly leading the pond digging activities, they informed. 

When contacted they said the government land turned to plain land and they have been utilizing thebsame. If government wants, we will leave the same. Ibrahim Hossain when asked said there is a piece of land in the beel which he owned from his four-father’s sources

Assistant Commissioner (AC) Land in Moheshpur Anisul Islam when contacted over cell phone said he was not informed about occupation of the huge government water body and over a hundred of ponds there. He will look into the matter after an investigation.
