We have many opportunities to promote our handloom sector. Our government attaches much importance to the promising handicraft sector as a heritage of the country. The government has organised the handloom festival with an aim to promote indigenous handloom products built in different districts of the country.
Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun made the comments while addressing as the chief guest the concluding session of a four-day ‘Heritage Handloom Festival-2019’ at a city hotel on Saturday.
SME Foundation and Association of Fashion Designers of Bangladesh organised the festival with the support of Ministry of Cultural Affairs for the second time in the country.
Some 45 entrepreneurs and designers in 45 stalls were displayed traditional and heritage products at the festival, brought from different regions of the country.
Products of 15 sectors were displayed such as jute products, Jamdani, Khadi, Rajshahi silk, cane and bamboo, folk art, Nakshi Kantha, Mirpur Benarasi, Tangail handloom, Sirajganj handloom (Lungi, Gamcha, Sarees), Rangamati handloom and Monipuri handloom in the festival.
The festival began on Wednesday where Planning Minister MA Mannan was present in the inaugural ceremony.
MA Mannan inaugurated the festival while State Minister for Industries Kamal Ahmed Majumder was present as special guest.
“I will request the ministry concerned to allocate more funds for the SME sector so that entrepreneurs can overcome the problem of capital shortage," he said.
“We should give more efforts to keep the handloom industry alive as a cultural heritage to acknowledge our roots."
State Minister for Industries Kamal Ahmed Majumder said the festival was arranged to promote and highlight the legacies of the hundred-year-old weaving industry.
“Every year this festival should be arranged nationally and at divisional levels so that our entrepreneurs can promote their products easily,” he said.
