Half of doctor posts vacant in Sylhet hospitals

The health services is being hampered severely due the acute shortage of doctors at different government hospitals in upazila and union health complexes in Sylhet. 

Sources said that almost half of the total posts of doctor lying vacant. Beside the shortage of doctors, many infrastructural and other problems are also liable for the run-down health services across the district, despite the government efforts to provide proper health care facilities to all.

According to district civil surgeon office, after the recent joining of 14 doctors at different upazila health complexes, a number of 122 doctor posts are vacant for long among a total of 264 posts in Sylhet.

In civil surgeon office and TB Hospital of the district, one doctor’s post is vacant in each.

In Sylhet Sadar area, thee doctor posts are vacant at 30-bed Khadimpara Hospital.

Outside the Sylhet city, condition of upazila and union health complexes is very unsatisfactory due to the shortage of doctors and other medical equipment. 

All the upazilas of the district are suffering from acute shortage of doctors with each upazila having 10 to 20 doctor posts vacant.

Sylhet civil surgeon Himangshu Lal Roy said the shortage of doctor is not a new matter. The government is continuously appointing new doctors to fill up the vacant posts.

He further said we recently appointed 14 doctors to different upazila health complexes of Sylhet.
