Thousands of people are suffering immensely everyday because of a deplorable condition of the Hajiganj-Ramganj road in Chandpur district.
Big and small potholes have developed on around 10 kilometres of the road, causing immense sufferings to the commuters. The road has become almost unusable for vehicles.
During a visit to the area, this correspondent found that the road right from Hajiganj Paschim Bazar area to Zia Nagar, Belchow Bazar, Fakir Bazar, Montola Bazar and the adjacent areas were left in a very poor condition.
Shariful Islam, 55, a resident of Palishara village, who uses the road daily said, "The road's condition is very miserable. Authorities should take steps to repair the road to mitigate our sufferings immediately".
Md Abdul Hamid Master, a teacher of the local Montola High School, said, "We all are facing untold difficulties because of the pitiable condition of the road".
Roads and Highways Department officials said that due to excessive rainfalls, the road developed a lot of holes and potholes where rainwater had been remaining stagnant for days together, causing sufferings to the passengers. The vehicles were also getting stuck in the mud here and there because of the holes and potholes filled with rainwater.
Section Officer of Chandpur's Roads and Highways Department Engineer Maruf Hossain said, "A proposal to renovate the road had been sent to the Cumilla Division Office recently".
He added, "Repair works will be done urgently to fill the holes and potholes and thus mitigate the sufferings of the people."
He also said, "Inviting tenders for repair of the road is in the process".
