‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ director James Gunn has once again gone on record as saying that the third installment in his trilogy will be the last time audiences will see the familiar team together. Gunn first made his mark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2014 with the original Guardians movie before following it up with Vol. 2 in 2017. ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is currently set to be the final chapter in Gunn's intergalactic saga, are set for a 2023 release.

The first Guardians movie introduced viewers to the core team of Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Rocket Racoon (Bradley Cooper), and Groot (Vin Diesel). While only having two standalone movies to date, the Guardians have played a pivotal role in the larger MCU, joining the fight against Thanos in both Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. Audiences have come to know and love the band of misfits that make up the current Guardians of the Galaxy roster, but the series' director is warning fans that the team is about to see some major changes.

While speaking on Deadline's Hero Nation podcast to discuss his HBO Max series Peacemaker, which is currently the number one show in the world, Gunn said that the third Guardians film will surprise fans, calling it, "big and dark." When pressed on what the future holds for the ‘GOTG’ franchise after Vol. 3, Gunn said viewers should expect a new lineup for the team, insisting the third chapter will be the last time the original crew is seen together.
