Guava, a popular seasonal fruit in Bangladesh, is grown in plenty particularly in greater northern Rajshahi regions. The tropical fruit that matures in the post monsoon season, now has a fairly new variety. Known as the ‘Apple of Bengal,’ the wild variety is now commercially grown in hilly Kanchan-Nagar of Patiya upazila of South Chattogram. This variety is only grown in the region due to the region’s distinct quality of soil that suites cultivation of the fruit. Said to be delicious in taste, the fruit has appealing aroma and it grows bigger in size. Well known for its nutrition values, the fruit is only sold in the region and unlike the other varieties available in the rest of the country, this variety is said to be costlier.
