For the first time since its establishment, Gopalganj University of Science and Technology (GSTU) has awarded scholarships to 1,091 meritorious and financially disadvantaged students. Organised by the Student Counselling and Guidance Office, the event was held on Monday at the university’s open-air stage.

Scholarships were awarded to the top five students from each semester, totalling 800 merit-based recipients, along with 291 students from underprivileged backgrounds. UGC member Prof Dr Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan, attending as chief guest, praised the administration for recognising talent. He criticised past practices of personal gain and called for a return to academic values, urging universities to focus on knowledge creation and merit-based appointments.  Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Hossain Uddin Shekhar stated over Tk 2.1 million was spent on scholarships, with an additional Tk 1 million previously allocated for the VC’s Award. A self-reliance programme involving 100 students is also underway

Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Md Sohel Hasan encouraged students not to lose momentum, while Treasurer Prof Dr Md Nazmul Ahsan highlighted the deeper significance of recognising merit.

Guests included the District Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, and other university officials. The event began with a minute’s silence in memory of the July martyrs.
