The recent declaration by the Food Minister about grading the restaurants of capital is a laudable and appreciable initiative. This development in the food and restaurant sector is sure to bring a lot of changes in the restaurant business. On top of this, since there are risks of being penalized, if any restaurants were to fail in this grading system, the people are able to finally breathe a sigh of relief.

Just a few months ago, there were reports in national dailies mentioning BSTI’s action about revoking the license of a number of well known food producing companies. But still, there is no headway being made in the elimination of this consistent game of feeding the masses harmful and dangerous food products.

At a time like this, when the country is engulfed

by uncertainty about food, this is undeniably the

best course of action that can be taken by the government

Recent reports following on the BSTI incidents highlight the fact that the problem is far from over. Earlier, more emphasis was put on powdered turmeric, chilli, salt, vermicelli and oil, which are more used in the Ramadan days due to obvious reasons. But following up on that issue, research conducted by Dhaka University has come up with results which are even more baffling. Most of the sample food products are below standard as per criteria set by BSTI.

At a time like this, when the country is passing through uncertainty about food, this is undeniably the best course of action that can be taken by the government. However, this has only been seen as a declaration so far, the people still have to wait for some time until action is taken on the streets.

The authorities concerned should learn from the previous experiences and take appropriate action so that substandard food can totally be removed from the restaurants. This will only come to fruition when the action to be taken dictated by the Food Minister is realized.
