Ruling Awami league general secretary Obaidul Quader on Friday said that the government was not bothered about the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s reactions to the polls.

“We are not bothered by how the Bangladesh Nationalist Party would react to the polls but rather we are concerned about the price hike,” he told reporters at a briefing at party president Sheikh Hasina’s political office at Dhanmondi.

The AL spokesperson said the BNP, which boycotted 12th parliamentary elections, failed to wage a movement.

“They now have to talk on different issues to save their skin before their foreign friends,” he said, claiming that the BNP did not participate in the polls fearing defeat.

Quader, also road transport and bridges minister, said that the government did not notice any complaint from the people.

“Despite some unrest, we have not noticed any complaint from the people. All are leading a normal life. We have been discharging our responsibilities,” he said.

Over the price hike of essentials, the AL spokesperson said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been concerned about the matter.

“She (Hasina) is now thinking of fulfilling the pledges made to the people through the election manifesto. She has been advising different ministries to go forward with specific plans,” he said.

When his attention was drawn that whenever the government takes any move to curb the price of essentials, the price of some items shoot up, the minister said they are trying to curb the price.

“I have not said that the price will come down from tomorrow. I have said that we are trying to control the price,” he said.

Responding to a question whether the bilateral relations with the United States of America would improve further, he said why the relations would not be better.

“The USA has not even said that the elections were completely flawed. The US ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas greeted the Prime Minister,” he said.
