Govt working to upgrade shipping system: Khalid

State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury on Saturday said that the government has been working relentlessly to upgrade the shipping system of the country.

“Because of reopening the Balashighat to Bahadurabadghat launch route, the people of eight northern districts would be able to go to Dhaka via Mymensingh within short time from now”, he said this after inaugurating a naval terminal at Fulchhari Upzazila in Gaibandha as the chief guest.

Presided over by Commodore Golam Sadeq, Chairman of BIWTA, the meeting was also addressed among others by District President of the Awami League Advocate Syed Shams-ul-Alam Hiru, General Secretary Abu Bakar Siddique, Deputy Commissioner Gaibandha Oliur Rahman, Police 

 Super Muhammad Towhidul Islam, Fulchhari Upazila Chairman and President of the Upazila Awami League GM Selim Parvez and its General Secretary Farzana Rabbi Bubli.

The BIWTA has built the naval terminals with various infrastructures in both ghats at the cost of TK 140 crore, he said adding that dredging work has also been completed in 14 km area of the Brahmaputra River at a cost of Taka 24 crore for smoothly launch movement.

The state Minister also announced the naming of Balashighat after Fazley Rabbi Miah, MP, who is now the Deputy Speaker of the Jatiya Sangshad.

The speakers thanked the government for reopening this naval route aimed at mitigating the sufferings of the people of eight northern districts.

A large number of people from all walks of life attended the programme.
